Information for Professionals

We work in partnership with courts, community probation/corrections, legal professionals, police and community services to provide restorative justice services throughout Hawke’s Bay and Tairawhiti.

Our process is designed to be safe, timely, and aligned with Ministry of Justice guidelines. We aim to support positive outcomes for all participants while providing comprehensive reports that assist the sentencing process.

Who Can Be Referred?

Restorative justice is generally available when:

  • The offender has pleaded guilty
  • There is an identifiable victim
  • Both parties are willing to participate
  • The offence is appropriate for restorative dialogue

We accept referrals from:

Court coordinators

Lawyers (defence or prosecution)

Police

Community Probation / Corrections staff

Judges

Community agencies (with court approval)

When to Refer

Restorative justice is typically offered before sentencing. We recommend referrals be made as early as possible once a guilty plea is entered—ideally at the first available opportunity.

Referrals can also be made after sentencing in some instances, or as part of post-sentence rehabilitation or community resolutions (contact us to discuss suitability).

Our Process

Referral received

  1. Initial contact with both parties to explain the process and assess suitability
  2. Preparation meetings with victims and offenders (and their support people)
  3. Restorative justice conference facilitated in a safe, neutral setting
  4. Report prepared and submitted to court summarising participation and outcomes
  5. Follow-up support as needed

Timeframes

We aim to complete the process within 6–8 weeks of referral, depending on participant availability and case complexity. Urgent matters can be prioritised when required.

The Report

Our restorative justice reports are structured, impartial, and compliant with Ministry of Justice expectations. They include:

  • Participant summaries
  • Conference outcomes
  • Victim and offender engagement
  • Agreed actions (if applicable)
  • Any safety or process issues noted


These reports are submitted to court for judicial consideration ahead of sentencing.
